I only spent one drunken night there and I thought it was quite nice. There were lots of cool little bars around there. There was one where the owner was a huge Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, etc fan and had a ton of records and stuff. I also spent some time at Replay Bar where me and the bar tender got drunk together (got to love free drinks) and then the snack girls came in to drink after they got off work. I stayed there until 6am. Good times
I also heard it snows there alot.

I was there for one year about 20 years ago. I know the place has changed since then, but when I was there, it was a small, rural community. Off base housing was substandard in many cases. The base was in the process of upgrading its facilities. One of the new additions at that time was the arrival of Burger King. The Exchange was slated for an upgrade at that time as well. There wasn't a lot to do either on base or offbase then. I tended to party with people in their houses. There is a lake on base and the countryside is beautiful especially in the fall when the leaves change colors. It does snow a lot and the winter is long. The base shared its landing strip with the domestic airlines. It wasn't cheap to fly to Tokyo, but it was the way most people who wanted to get out of the area ended up doing. Once in awhile I would drive to Hachinohe, which was the closest large city around. The Japanese people were very nice. I was glad when it was time for me to leave.

Mr.Trail was there just last year. He'll post some info. and maybe some pics later on. From what he read from Ryukyuboi's post, he said A LOT has changed since then.

Sweet. Hopefully things aren't much different than living in Okinawa. Stuff like buying a car, living off-base utilizing a housing agency, etc.

Snow snow snow and backpack girls! I had a buddy go up there and he said he enjoyed it. If you don't mind the cold and snow you should be fine. I'll have to ask him again but I'm pretty sure the community surrounding Misawa is still pretty small. But you're on mainland so you could easily travel to a place like Sapparo, Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, etc... I heard there are a lot of nice hot springs up there too:thumbup:

Misawa is a great assignment, if you like outdoors and small town living. The winters are not too bad but you do get a lot of snow, temperatures rarely drop in the negatives. A lot of the housing off-base is nice and I never once had to pay any outrageous agency fees or deal with any other hastles. On base housing is just like Kadena with Towers & multiplex units. It’s a cool place with a lots of stuff to do. Most people that hate Misawa never drive more than ten miles away from the base.
no curfew
no traffic
no protests
no bases near by
I would go back if I had the chance

Good duty.......sucks if you like a big city. I would perish if Tokyo was more than 30 minutes from my front door. :D

Knife spent a week there, and said one thing, a car is imperative. If you want something it is at least 20 minutes away by car.
He was there a month, waiting for someone to be stupid, or be ill. LOTS of time on his hands.
He really liked being up there though.
