Is Wave whatever the only thing we have to listen to? I feel like I'm going to go insane by the amount of times they replay the SAME songs. And the DJ's crack lame jokes :barf:..lol.. I think Samy? was the name.. well one of the other guys is a bit entertaining can remember the name, but he would be better. Are there any other stations out there? When I do pick up the local channels even they play a larger variety of English music:thumbup:

87.3FM isn't bad from what I hear, and another member of ours posted about 88.1FM. If any of you know of any good stations, feel free to post them here as well as maybe give us a little bit of information about what they generally play.

I don't know much about 87.3 or 88.1 so I can hardly give a worthy summary.

88.1 is actually ok at times...but moreso at night than in the daytime.

It does man. I've probably got 10 gigs of music on my I-Pod and I'm even getting tired of that. I need new music every three months or so.

Yeah, I've got a 40 gig, but the only time I ever want to shop for music is when I'm in Osaka. These days, I pretty much only buy from Cisco Records. Everything else, I get from Amazon if I decide I want it badly enough.

I buy music. :first:

Who else is going to support those Israeli/German/African Psychedelic Trance DJs? It's not like they're on the radio all day everyday lol.

I've never gotton into downloading music. If I want to hear something, I'll go see it live on youtube. If I want it in my car, I buy it.

Lately, I guess my favorite is DNA (album Kick Me Up), but I like Infected Mushroom, Yehel (Superset vol. 1 only), GMS, just about anything with Raja Ram on it, just about anything produced by Tip Records. Trying to remember all the groups I listen to... I'll give you more if you want more. GMS was my favorite for a long time, so I'd offer that off as my biggest suggestion. I like it dark.

I'd like to know when and if they will ever get the AM back. it was a nice break from the crap on FM just to listen to some of the sports talk and dr. laura? it's been so long I forgot her name.
someone needs to do a fitness report on whoever the incompetents are running AFN here. and deploy lady love. please.

Last I heard was someone messed up while they were doing maintenance. Something about support cables not being tight and it was windy.... I dunno but I wouldn't doubt it. I do know those antennas aren't cheap and are probably on the low priorty list of things to do, as far as funding goes.

It was as old as the hills! I'm pretty sure the support cables were there to help it stand because it was so rusted. Maybe that played a factor in it's collapse as well.

DougP

Pretty close...they were replacing the support cables, before the new cable was in place they cut one of the old ones and creak, boom, bam...down it came!

The reason it is taking so long is that they had to budget the money for the repairs, being that this is a big job, and not something that they can run out to a local store and buy off the shelf!

Antenna like that are huge so of course it will take a while and be expensive.

I'm assuming it's an HF AM antenna so it will have to be larger then a VHF or UHF antenna. Antenna size is proportional to wave length size. It will also probably be a 1/4 wave length antenna so it won't be the full wave length size.

Yes, but why can't a dj just look out the window (not sure where it is) or drive by it and say something on the radio like, "man, the AM tower is going up little by little guys. Just saw it today and it was 20 meters off the ground," or something like us to at least let us know the construction effort has already begun.

Does anyone know where the actual antenna was, or where the new one is being built? Is it viewable from a road that people drive by? If so, post here and let us know what the construction looks like at the moment -- all these many months after it fell down and we've been hearing spots on the radio saying they are "working at it."

For some strange reason, I have the sense that construction has not taken form yet. But, hope I am wrong.

I was on camp butler (the part where all the high ranking officers live) testing out soft bank cell phones for work and I think it's right next to the AFN broadcasting building that is on camp butler. Damn officers, they have the nicest view from up their of the east china sea.

LOL some general was complaining about his cell phone service so I had to go to all the bases on island and test out our cell phones to make sure they worked. Of course, they worked fine. General was probably pissed he couldn't' make a call from his basement surrounded by concrete.

Plaza Housing is where AFN is located and MCB Butler's top brass live. It's across RTE 330 from the Awase golf course; big surprise there, huh? Heh.

I don't see why there'd be problems with a signal at the general's house. I've been to those homes recently. They're on a hill. My guess is that the general's wife complained about it, but actually doesn't know how to use her cell phone. Heh.

But can you see it, DrP, where the new one is being built? How far off the ground has the highest part of the tower been erected thus far?

I just don't know why someone can't give us a visual to this simple question I have asked several times. It is as if this 'tower under construction' has no matter associated with it and no one can see it. lol.

Perhaps they are building it in the center of the Norther Training Area, hence no visual report from anyone on it. Geesh. Like pulling teeth to get a little info.

Ok, fair enough. Sorry I missed that where it was mentioned before.

Then they should change their PSA on it to state that. I think they have worded it like, "We are working hard to restore AFN a.m. to the air." Sure that is correct if we view some office pogues in accounting trying to crunch numbers and get funds allocated for it, but to me, that statement sounds more proactive than that.

The PSA should simply say,
"Until funds for the construction of AFN a.m. are acquired, construction to restore it to the air waves will not begin. When they are acquired and construction begins we will make an announcement to that effect."

At least that takes out a lot of wondering on the part of listeners.

No need for spinning the reality of the situation IMO. Not that office pogues and accountants don't work hard. I am sure they do. <smile>

Come on now, they dont even care that they are putting out one PoS broadcast on Wave 89, do you really think they are putting that much effort into getting a 2nd one working?

the DJ's don't know what's going on. there is a Gunnery Sgt with an office on Kadena who is supossed to be in charge of AFN. I think he needs to ramp up his knowledge of what is happening. it sure seems like his seemingly incompetance is showing. there is no practical reason that antenna should still be down except that they don't care it doesn't work or has crashed as reported.

Let me tell you about AFN...

It's much worse than a monopoly - it's more akin to some anachronistic 60's Soviet state-sponsored propoganda network.

In true Soviet fashion, the AM tower was a shoddy collection of rusted metal built with superficiality, not durability, in mind.

Camp Kinser was left with the burden of harboring that eyesore; I've heard it will be hosting the undoubtedly short-lived replacement.

AFN isn't about quality, by any stretch of the imagination. It revolves around information - a steady, mind-numbing flow of useless, poorly-produced, amateurish information.

Tenants of civilian broadcasting like quality control, good contests, audience interaction, and music that appeals to your target audience are eschewd in favor of gutless repetition and bland, neutered programming that essentially guarantees an unoffended general audience. AFN: the eunich of radio.

The standards and practices exhibited in AFN broadcasts seem to defy every norm; DJ's who display any semblance of talent or creativity seem to have conspicuously finite careers, whereas monotone, verbally flaccid personalities manage to linger on the air well after the audience is cursing their name. (In my humble opinion after listening for years.)

I don't mind interracting with the DJ's on this forum, but my disdain for AFN runs pretty deep. This day-in, day-out horseshit is supposed to engage listeners with petty news stories and "uplifting" programs from cyborg DJ's who attempt to act like they're infallible; it's just a slap in the face. I long for some conflict, angst, reality and truth from military broadcasts. Instead, we have, "WAVE 89: THE BEST SOURCE FOR THE HITS!". The fact is, while some people are happy here, plenty of us are counting down the days before we flee this goddamn rock...

...so don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining.

P_chan

But GRA 4s are tactical and not meant for permanent installation. Not to mention you would have to take them down every typhoon. Okinawa is a very mountainous place and there would be a lot of dead spots in valleys and such.

The range on any HF AM transmission can actually be very far indeed, after all HF AM is used for reach back comm. Because of the thiner ionosphere at night, the range is increased during the hours of darkness. You can pick up AM stations and other AM transmissions from half way across the globe at night time.

Could you imagine a worse hell than being on an umbrella factory production line while the umbrella song played over and over on the loudspeakers for an 8 hour shift?

I was perturbed by the midday ass-hat playing New Kids on the block; it's bad enough the current music is repetitive and annoying, now the DJ's are making efforts to ravage our ears in different musical eras.

Mr. Weatherby continues to reassert his ass-hatness with piss-poor songs accompanied by excruciatingly long phone calls. On top of this, he attempts to mitigate his own suckiness by berating callers. It's bad enough to endure AFN - I don't need some smart-ass hack giving me shit when I finally reach the bastard after dialing the request line for an hour straight.

The AM tower's construction in the foreseeable future is just a pipe dream - perhaps if I built a baseball field up north, and chanted shitty top 40 songs for a few hours, another AM tower would magically appear, a la "Field of Dreams." Don't get your hopes up, guys.

And yes, I have issues - if you spend enough time exposed to AFN radio, it saps any vestige of sanity you would've maintained. It's like the chernobyl of radio - if you get overexposed, you're screwed for life!

You sure like the word ass-hat huh?

Your right though, they probably will never build another AM antenna. Just like they will never put up a golf ball net on the side of the kadena golf course the faces the flightline.

This morning was just sad! This is not a knock on Samy...but rather on those two MasterSgt's (AF) that took part in the 1stShirt talk.

Listen guys...if you are going to go on the radio, take enough time to plan out your responses. There were too many uhs, and I don't knows, and I'm not sure's. These guys are supposed to be shit hot, and on the ball as far as regulations go, but they came across lost.

Samy did a good job keeping things going, but if any of you ever have an opportunity to go on the air, prepare yourself before hand.

anybody can use the Butler O club. just like Kadena's O club. the only problem with it is it's not open all the time. but they have a good Sunday brunch.
why can't AFN co locate the AM antenna on the FM tower? or is there such a thing? ot the TV tower?

P_chan

AM antennas are usually bigger then FM antennas. The lower the frequency, the bigger the antenna. Not to mention they would probably cause interference with one another. You can get interference just by placing the antenna lines too close to electrical lines.

Is it only me when I say that love is in the air when you're there in Okinawa?
It hits you hard in the soul. How can it not? Look at it, beautiful tropical oceans, crashing against rocks that push upward at a slant. white sandy beaches with a scorching hot sun. Beautiful sunsets. Your lover glancing at you, on a moonlit beach. What's not to love? I love it and want to be there again.

Thanks Cathleen for reviving this thread, even tho a little off the topic but sweet.

So does anyone have any more intel on the late 648 AM, or are they still planning the bake sale to finance the new antenna?

Our local radio station has their FM and AM antennas on the same tower. As long as there's no harmonics or mixing involved, the two don't interact. It's only a 500 foot tower.

According to my bad math, a 1/4 wave antenna at 648 kHz is roughly 361 feet long, not accounting for the antenna material and other factors. Of course, I usually deal with much higher frequencies at work, very little call in my field for LF/MF.

You could easily transmit enough AM power to blanket the island and several hundred miles of ocean with a piece of thin wire. Durability and loss would be the main factors for a larger conductor. I have easily transmitted several thousand watts of HF with #14 copper wire from Lowes. Antenna design is also influenced by the intended broadcast area.

We generally budget $100K for replacement of a 120 foot freestanding tower. That doesn't include antennas, structures, cabling, or transmitters. So a million bucks is probably about right.

AM, along with shortwave, is rapidly switching to digital broadcasting. DRM is becoming more popular as more and more stations switch over.

Crap, just realized how old this thread is. Anyway, any more news on the missing antenna? Hehe, sorry.

I don't know how it happened or how tall it is (very doubtful it is a full 1/4-wave) but 648 AM has been back for a month or so. Still junky country on weekends but a few good programs in between Hannity and Limbaugh on weekdays.

Pretty much cause it's just another military propaganda machine. A medium for pushing MCCS/Services sponsored events, tours, etc. A place where commanders can put across their talking points, etc., etc.

If you think about it, here in Okinawa, we are bombarded all day long with military-approved garbage. Get up in the morning, turn on the news, you get "Around the Services" telling us about some asshole sailors building a home for retarded kids. Oh, and during commercials, the infamous AFN spots. Drive to work, here's Wave 89, with whatever dumb twit of the minute they choose to put on the air...example:

Rach H: "Why do people choose to come to Okinawa, this beautiful tropical place, and then ride around with their windows rolled up?? Gahh!"

Me: Because it's HOT, you dumb bitch! That's why cars HAVE windows! And umm..you do realize most of the people here didn't CHOOSE to come here, right???? Psst, look at that Okinawan in the next car...she's in the AC with her windows up, laughing at you and your musty ass sweating in this heat!

Get to work, by the front door- why there's the OkiMar to tell us what color socks we can and can't wear. F--k it, I'm going to go to the Shoppette and grab some coffee- oh look, the Stars and Stripes! Got an appointment at dental? Never fear, Okinawa Living magazine is right there in the waiting room to tell you that there is a karaoke contest at the Globe and Anchor- 1st prize, an MCCS t-shirt!

Drive home, more Wave 89. Get to the commissary to pick up something for dinner- there's a big red ass sign telling you that you can't wear this or that. Finally get home, just in time for a commercial telling you "there's more to your service compensation than base pay!" Don't like it? Well there's always 24 hour Pentagon channel.

So yeah, there's a BIG problem with just having one radio station controlled by the military. I wish I knew how to start a radio station here, I'd be the anti-AFN. They would make my shit off-limits. And for sponsors, I could get all the soapies and bars on Gate 2 to do commercials. I'd let you call in anonymously and talk shit about your boss, his wife, whatever. NCIS would be on my ass everyday! I can almost see it now....:scratchchin:

No I'm not agreeing with her at all. She said open your windows beacuse okinawa is beautiful and you are somehow missing it by keeping them closed. I said I seldom use my AC due to the fact that I like to have the wind blowing in my face. Two totally different reasons, don't see how they relate at all except for the fact of not using AC. I do still use AC when the wife is in the car, and I don't feel as if I'm missing out on okinawa because of it:rolleyes:.

I think the reason I don't mind not using AC is because my very first car (back in the states) didn't have AC so I got used to it. But then again, back home I used to ride around in the winter with my windows down and the heat on:thumbup:

After hearing him I do believe that he would have to be the WORST DJ! It's like he is trying way too hard to be goofy and it just comes off as annoying.
