View Full Version : Allergies
I don't have any allergies that I'm aware of but it seems that when I go to the states or other climates, that I breathe better. Then when I come back to Okinawa my sinuses are horrible. Does anyone else have this problem? Am I allergic to Okinawa?

I have the same problem. My first two summers in Okinawa I was fine but then last summer for some reason my sinuses went haywire. I would sneeze 15 times in a row and my nose would be runny all day. Even when I took my honeymoon to mainland it lessened to an extent and went away by the end of our trip. When I got back to Okinawa it was back in a month! Since I've left I haven't had it come back yet.
Maybe there is a specific plant in Okinawa whose pollen I'm allergic to?
Chicago and Ohio mostly, but also like P said, when I go to main land or Seoul I notice a change also.

My mother had a hard time when she visited Oki too. She is from a rural, fairly pollution free area of Pa, so I figured it was the pollution or maybe the higher humidity.

I have always thought Okinawa to to be less polluted than mainland metropolitan areas but I know the coral dust and humidity can inflame the sinus's something fierce.

Well I'm from a fairly polluted area so I know it's not the pollution. My bet is on some type of plant whose pollen is in the air during the summertime.

Many people are sensitive to the cabin pressure changes in a plane and the stuffy air that's vented. The "allergy" usually lasts anywhere from a couple days to a week or so depending. It's a plane thing.

Just throwing this out there, but you can develop allergies at any time during your life.:)
There's a ton of dust and pollen and stuff that blows in from China. I remember it was real bad last year and I've noticed my car covered in it after the rain we had last week.

Allergies are every where. What bother most people here in Oki is all the mold spores.
Side note: Has anyone's allergies been acting up this week specifically. My throat and ears are scratchy and I am trying to determine if I caught a bug or if it's just allergies.

This happened to me in the form of food allergies. It sucks!

Sorry to hear, that would suck. Hopefully not seafood. I always feel bad for people with seafood allergies but if I were to develop one after knowing the sweet savory taste of crab, shrimp, lobster, uni, octopus, and various fish, I don't know how I'd go on.

And asthma:crying: I recently ended up in the hospital as a result of that. Being exposed to allergens consistently for a week caused me to develop a bad case of reactive airway disease and eventually started having horrible asthma attacks. Yep now I'm part of the wonderful club of adult-onset asthma and even have my own nifty inhaler :argh14:

Thanks. It is an allergy to seafood, specifically anything with iodine in it. I used to eat shrimp by the platter. Now, I break out in hives. :cursing: It frakkin sucks a lot. I also became somewhat lactose intolerant... The thing is, I'm a daughter of an ice cream man and ate ice cream or drank milk nearly everydamnday of my life until I realized it. So, my husband eats everything I can't on my behalf...

I'm allergic to shrimp and hate lobster, crab and squid because it all tastes or smells the same and also hate octopus.
I hear shrimp are the cockroachs of the ocean. :barf: maybe thats why I cant eat it.

Me too! I can still drink a little milk but if I drink allot, I get mad gas. LOL
It happened when I moved to Okinawa and stopped drinking milk everyday. I lost the enzymes to brake it down or something I guess.
Just drink soy milk. Its 10X better for you in every way.

No, crab tastes NOTHING like squid. I can't stand the taste of squid but I'd love me some crab legs right about now. The only seafood I'll eat is crab and sometimes lobster depending on how it's cooked. Everything else just tastes too fishy to me:D
I've still got a spot for some fried lake perch from lake Michigan. Used to eat it as a kid but I haven't had any in quite some time.

I hear ya and "to each his own". I've heard the same thing about shrimp and to be honest the little effer's freak me out when I see them alive but I've always liked them and never have a problem eating them when it comes time. It's actually sort of surprising, as much as I hate bugs and spiders. I even enjoy Escargot occasionally and that really grosses me out - lol..

Ryu, you should try a bowl of sauteed bugs with beer! Crunchy and tasted great with beer! Lots of protein and low fat. Oh yeah, this was in Thailand by the way.
I guess it would be possible for me to eat cockroaches.... I said possible, not likely... But who knows, maybe it tastes good! hahaha

mold, mildew & fungus's are galore. So while not allergic to Okinawa itself....perhaps some of the wonderful things that grow so well, you are.
Went through the car wash w/ someone last night and they had a soft-top and the car hadn't been washed in a few weeks. I damn near died, felt like i was sitting in a dust-storm but the other person was fine.
