Miyako woman confesses to murder five years ago

Date Posted: 2004-03-04

Police on Miyako Island have arrested a suspect in a murder mystery that happened over five years ago. According to Miyako Police, a naked and tied up body of an 85-year-old woman was found on a sugar field in Aragusuku Village. The police investigation into the case discovered very few clues and lead investigators nowhere.

The police arrested 63-year-old Fujiko Shimoji on Saturday after she came to the police herself and confessed to the killing. The suspect is living in the same neighborhood where the victim lived, and reportedly had borrowed from her a considerable amount of money that she had not paid back.

Police had questioned Shimoji repeatedly after the victim was found but she had denied any involvement at that time, and the police could not link any evidence to her.

Lately Shimoji had reportedly started telling her neighbors that she had trouble sleeping as an image of an old woman repeatedly appeared in her bedroom. “I can’t sleep as she comes to my bedside every night. That’s why I must confess that I killed her,” Shimoji reportedly told her neighbors.

However, investigators say that Shimoji has kept mum since her arrest, and has not even answered questions like “Who are you?” or “Where do you live?” Investigation to the crime is continuing.
