Typhoon troubles tourists in Ishigaki, Yonaguni

Date Posted: 1998-08-07

The second typhoon of the season is expected to affect Ishigaki and Yonaguni Islands located some three to four hundred miles south-west of Okinawa, with heavy rains and strong winds. According to Okinawa Meteorological Observatory, both islands were affected by strong winds starting 7 a.m., Tuesday. The observatory said that the typhoon was rather small with gale force wind area extending only 25 kilometers in diameter.

Because of the typhoon, shipping companies canceled all their regular routes to the islands. Airlines were also considering cancellations by Tuesday evening.

The typhoon is expected to cause some inconvenience to tourists visiting the islands, but local residents look forward to the expected rainfall because of long-running dry spell. The Meteorological Observatory expects the typhoon to bring from 150 to 200 mm of rain.
