Pets are no more accepted for cremation by prefecture

Date Posted: 2001-08-22

Okinawa Prefecture officials announced that they would stop taking dead animals for disposing of at the Animal Care Center in Osato Village.

The purpose of the decision is to clarify the responsibility of pet owners and the local governments, and to put more resources into their intended activity, which is animal care. They also demand each local government to consider establishing an incinerator exclusively for animals.

There are few prefectures in Japan that accept dead animals for disposal. Though only a few proper facilities are in operation in Okinawa, the Animal Care Center has taken care of the role and supplying the service. According to the officials, they made the decision, as people have had a misunderstanding that the center is an incinerator.
