Thieves taking baitfish anguish bonito fishermen

Date Posted: 2001-08-22

At this high season of bonito fishing, Motobu Fishery Association officials complain that the association has suffered from the theft of the small fish from their preserve since June. The small fish are used for bait.

As officials from the association checked a fish preserve off Unten Port at night on Aug 12, they discovered that about 120 kilograms of the fish were missing.

According to a captain of a bonito fishing boat, the thieves have visited their preserves at least for more than six times since June. In July, members of the fishermen’s association sighted a suspicious boat in the vicinity of their fish preserve cage where the baitfish is kept, but they could not identify the boat.

Presently, bonito fishing operations have not been affected very badly, but depending on the future situation the association may have to consider reducing the amount catch. Association officials worry that they would not be able to operate through the peak season at full scale.
