Officials at the Okinawan supermarket chain operator San-A announced plans to construct a new megastore at Ameku New Urban Area in Naha City, preciously a U.S. military housing area. The slot was originally reserved for Daiei Department Store, but the company withdrew its plans a month ago citing financial constraints. After Daiei announced its withdrawal, several companies submitted bids to take over the development of the complex. The plan calls for construting a department store, movie theaters, hotel and other facilities in the mall. The Ameku Area Development Committee awarded the contract to San-A after reviewing bids from department store operator Jusco, real estate developer Daiwa Kosho and others.
