2000 Drunk Driving Figures ReleasedDate Posted: 2001-03-02 Okinawa has twice as many fatal traffic accidents caused by drunk drivers as does mainland Japan. In the year 2000 29 of the 76 fatal Okinawan car accidents, or 38.2%, were caused by drunk drivers. In mainland Japan the comparable figure was 15.9 percent. In order to better understand the factors behind the statistics, Okinawa police since 1999 have been asking those arrested to fill out a questionnaire detailing the circumstances of their driving under the influence. Just over half of those arrested co-operated in the survey, which asked 17 questions. Police found that 29 % of those questioned had driven their cars to bars or restaurants to drink. Half were arrested at weekends. 40.1% were in their 20s. Okinawa Prefecture Police Station announced its intention of heavily patrolling the bar and restaurant districts of Okinawa in future. |
