WWII shell detonated at Oroku construction site

Date Posted: 2012-06-29

A bomb disposal team from the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force made seemingly easy work of a five-inch American shell found on an Oroku construction site in Naha City.

The shell was first discovered weeks ago, leaving Explosive Ordnance Disposal personnel to decide how to best take care of demolition and disposal of the fuse. After evacuating some 350 people from 123 families and 18 companies within a 106-meter radius of the site, the team began work.

The Okinawa Urban Monorail Yui Rail was stopped fully for 50 minutes with EOD labored over the shell. Officials say about 1,500 rail passengers were affected. The disposal operation began at 10 a.m. and lasted less than an hour. Officials say there was no confusion or panic.
