Date Posted: 2000-01-08

On January 1st, the Foreign Ministry of Japan presented the official Kyushu-Okinawa Summit logo.

The logo will serve as a symbol marking the Kyushu-Okinawa Summit on all the facilities that will be used during G8 Summit. The same logo and related symbolswill appear on official papers and brochures.

The Japanese Government had launched a competition for logo designs for the Kyushu-Okinawa Summit. The competition went on for about two months since last August. The winner was determined out of 5,570 applicants, including 429 applicants from Okinawa Prefecture. A special selection committee chose the winner, and then the final decision was made by the Japanese Prime Minister, Keizo Obuchi. One of the applicants from Okinawa, Hideyuki Chinen, a 47-year old graphic designer in Okinawa City, finally won the contest. His work has an image of the sun and the ocean, which express the brightness of Kyushu and Okinawa. It also reveals a high degree of gentleness and an intimate atmosphere. The logo has eight red circles representing the member nations of Kyushu-Okinawa Summit.
