Kokeshi Roller Dolls to launch inaugural season
Date Posted: 2011-05-19
It’s called a sport of fast skates and hard hits, and it’s about to become a part of Okinawa’s athletics landscape.
The Kokeshi Roller Dolls have been training since last October to bring roller derby, one of the fastest growing sports in the world, to Japan, and are set to begin the inaugural season this fall. The fledgling league, skater-owned and skater-run, is comprised of more than 60 players, coaches and non-skating officials and referees. Three teams, the Sake Bombers, Habu Hellions and Shisa Slammers are currently in the league.
Kokeshi Roller Dolls--packing names like Pisa Cake, Drop Dead Red, BashAss WallopHer, Cherry Bomb-Her, Nurse FightnBail and Punch’er Down Brown--are part of the only contact sport dominated by women, developed by the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association. The league will hold its competitions with two teams battling it out on the track at Comprehensive Park Arena, with fast Jammers lapping through the pack of Blockers for intense entertainment including those hard hits, whips and fast skating action.
The Kokeshi Roller Dolls are still looking for members. Information on joining, or attending matches, is available at www.kokeshirollerdolls.com.
