Gorbachev Foundation Japan Headquarters open in NahaDate Posted: 2002-12-14 The first task of the Japan chapter of the foundation is to make preparations for the Globalization Forum 2003, a gathering of experts to discuss about globalization and its effects on economies and environment. At a press conference held at Naha City Hall Naha City Mayor Takeshi Onaga expressed his delight for the fact that the foundation had decided to establish its Japan headquarters in Naha. “It’s an honor to have Gorbachev Foundation Japan based in Naha City. We will give them every support we possibly can,” Onaga promised. Vladimir Volyakov represented the foundation. “Okinawa with its long history of peace movement is a very appropriate location for Gorbachev Foundation’s Japan Headquarters. We will work towards world peace and friendship, and better understanding between people. I expect to have many friendships with many people in Okinawa,” Volyakov declared. The chairman of Gorbachev Foundation Japan is Moriyasu Yoshiyama, who is also the chairman of the Small and Medium-size Companies Federation. He said that Okinawa is well positioned to show the world that peace has a chance. “It means a lot to have this foundation in Naha City. Okinawa is the home of huge U.S. bases but still America and Russia can be friends. We can show that the world is changing, and there are other alternatives to war,” Yoshiyama said. |
