Residents in communities around Haebaru waste disposal site are still adamantly opposing an agreement between Haebaru Town and Naha City extending the use of the site until 2007, and demand that Naha City takes it’s trash someplace else.
Residents adamant; Naha should take its trash elsewhere
Date Posted: 2002-12-14
The agreement to extend Naha City’s permission to use of the site was reached recently at a meeting between the mayors of the municipalities. As the site in Haebaru is the only place where Naha can take its trash, not extending the permission would have put the city in a very bad pinch.
Although Naha City agreed to pay an extra bonus of ¥80 million to improve the surrounding area infrastructure and clean up old pollution damage from the site, the 85 residents in the area say that the problem is not money. “The town should take care of our own problems first and enhance the Haebaru residents’ quality of life. Extending the use of this dumpsite is definitely against that. Naha City should take care of it’s own waste problems and not dump it on us,” a local resident said in an interview.
In order to get the residents’ opposition change, Naha City Mayor with the help of Haebaru Town officials organized a town meeting where he wowed that Naha City would clean the site, and ensure that no pollution would occur in the future. However, he was talking to the walls as none of the area residents showed up.
