Lay judge trial sentences man to prison for arson

Date Posted: 2011-03-13

A man accused of setting fire to his neighbor’s building has been sentenced to four years in prison by the Naha District Court in a lay judge trial.

Nagayori Morine was accused of destroying his neighbor’s building in a May 2010 fire in Uruma City’s Katsuren District. The 49-year-old Morine was convicted of arson.

The trial court ruled that Morine’s motive in setting fire to the house was planned suicide and egoism. The case centered around that motive, and Morine’s inability to deny he knew the risks the fire would spread and result in serious damage.
