Okinawan claims Naha Marathon men's title

Record numbers of runners started—and finished—Sunday’s Naha Marathon, with an Ogimi Village man breaking the finish line tape in 2 hours 25 minutes and 50 seconds.

Sunday’s Naha Marathon saw 30,081 runners sprint from the Asahibashi starting line, leading along the 42.195-kilometer course that wound its way along southern and central Okinawa. There were 21,675 men and 8,406 women running the 2009 Naha Marathon, with its theme “Festival of the Sun and Ocean and Joggers”. A record 20,860, 69.35% of the runners, finished the course, a 0.19% increase over last year.

Choshin Taira, a 27-year-old from Ogimi Village took first place in men’s competition, while 24-year-old Risa Mizutani claimed the women’s title with a time of 2 hours 50 minutes 42 seconds. The race was run under sunny conditions with a 20.1C temperature. Volunteers lined the route handing out bananas, fruits, drinks, and sports muscular pain medicines, while an Eisa dance group and a brass band provided entertainment and encouragement.
