Okinawa suicides on the rise for 12th straight year

Date Posted: 2009-12-03

Statistics show the number of suicides in Japan increasing, much the same as suicides being recorded in Okinawa.

Okinawa’s figures show 355 people have died by their own hand during the January-October period this year, up from 337 during the same period a year ago. Nationwide, the suicides total for January-October was 27,664.

“Suicide is the illness of the isolated,” says Dr. Takashi Inada. “Help is in Okinawan people’s minds, recently more Okinawans are trying to kill themselves.” Dr. Inada says it “might be the weakening Okinawa family relationships and that in the social world many people have been cut off, and therefore, the safety net is broken and has left people alone.” He adds that doctors and mental health facilities make it easier for people to seek for help, but it’s never enough to help everyone.
