Drivers show patience during feline rescue

Date Posted: 2009-12-03

The kitten strolled across the street at a traffic light on Route 329 in the Yonabaru area, then ducked under a transportation company truck stopped at the signal.

What happened next on Saturday morning was something just short of miraculous. The driver saw the kitten go under his truck, so he stopped the engine, got out and took a look. Two things surprised him: First, horns did not honk and people did not get irritated. Second, the kitten was scared and nestling itself deeper into the truck’s engine compartment.

The compassionate driver knew he couldn’t start the truck without injuring the kitten, so he pushed the truck to the side of the road by hand with the help from some bystanders. Other drivers patiently stayed in their cars and watched. After a half-hour of cajoling, the driver managed to convince the kitten to crawl into his arms and pulled it to safety. That ‘loving feeling’ didn’t last long though; the frightened kitten jumped down and raced from the scene.

Other drivers smiled at the rescue. “I feel good for the rescue of the kitten,” said one driver sitting in the Route 329 traffic jam. “Nobody was angry,” said another. “Everyone waited until the animal was rescued. For that, I also feel good.”
