Cat found harpooned through stomach in Ozato Village

Date Posted: 2003-10-11

A citizen’s phone tip led to discovery of animal abuse in Ozato Village early this week. Officials at Okinawa Prefecture Animal Protection Center responding to the call discovered a cat that someone had shot with a spear gun. When officials arrived, there was a cat that had been harpooned with a 107 cm long spear used usually for snorkel fishing. The spear had gone completely through the mid section of the cat’s body, but did not kill the animal. They took the cat to a vet, who performed an operation. The doctor says he is not optimistic about the feline’s chances. “It is very badly injured and the spear has done severe damage to its internal organs. I will do my best but my prognosis not optimistic,” the vet said.

Yonabaru Police is investigating the case as a criminal act of animal cruelty. Chief Tatsuo Kosugi at the Prefecture Animal Protection Center says that he has never seen a similar case. “I thought I had seen it all, but I have never seen anything like this. It is impossible that the cat got speared accidentally by jumping on the spear, as the spear penetrates its body squarely from left to right. Someone must have done it deliberately,” Kosugi said. He is also sure that t with the help of the police they will find the person who is responsible. “We sure will find the person who did it, and we will never forgive that person what he or she did to this animal,” Kosugi stated.
