Marine ‘forgot’ he had gun in airport luggage

Date Posted: 2009-11-25

A Marine stationed at Camp Hansen has been arrested by Tomoshiro City Police on charges of having a weapon in baggage at Naha International Airport.

The Marine has admitted to authorities he kept the gun, which was found last Wednesday during a Naha International Airport baggage check. “I was on the way home to the U.S.,” he told authorities, and said he forgot the gun was in the suitcase. There were no shells for the weapon, and no accessories, according to police.

Okinawa Prefecture Police say the only time weapons may be onboard aircraft is when the military person is on official duty, and has registered the weapon with Prefecture Police. After that, the police approve the weapon being taken aboard the airplane.
