Date Posted: 2009-11-05

A joyride on a rural Nakagusuku Village Route 29 early Sunday morning turned deadly as a mini car driven by a19-year-old careened out of control, crashed through a fence and plunged three meters down into a field.

A 15-year-old passenger died at the scene, and two other teens suffered spinal injuries. Police say the driver was drunk. A fourth boy in the car escaped uninjured. Police say the four boys had been driving around Naha City together and were on their way home when the accident occurred at 3:34 a.m. Police add that the car was totally demolished.

The Okinawa Prefecture PTA Union Chairman called it “a sad accident.” Mamoru Ota asked “why were these boys out after midnight or early in the morning. It was 3 a.m., time for everyone to be asleep at home.” He asks “what are the adults doing; they should be training young people not to go out at such a late time.”
