Typhoon zigs and zags, but causes problemsDate Posted: 2009-10-29 The rainfall was the troublemaker, and was severe enough to frighten planners to call off events in the interest of safety. Among them were the Okinawa Industrial Fair, the Izena Triathlon and the 17th Okinawa Friendship Sports Fest at Okinawa City Children’s Park. On Kumejima, the Kumejima Island marathon was cancelled, but the decision wasn’t made until after runners had already started arriving at the local airport. Many, including a runner from Toyama Prefecture who said “I wish we’d known before we came here. We don’t want to stay here, and we’ll go back home right away without resting,” were irritated that the decision had not been made earlier. Marathon organizers, who’d ordered T-shirts and anniversary goods for more than 2,000 runners, took the goods to the airport and distributed them to entrants. The cost of the shirts had been included in the marathon fees that now have to be returned to those who had intended to participate. |
