Spooks, creatures ready for frightful Halloween

Date Posted: 2009-10-29

From Kadena to Okinawa City to Chatan to Sam’s Café, the ghosts and goblins are making ready for a scar-ific Halloween such as Okinawa’s never seen before.

The world’s second largest AAFES facility, the Kadena Shopping Center, is jumping into the Halloween Experience with events on Halloween afternoon. The newly opened shopping center’s insisting it’s “more than a store…it’s an EXPERIENCE!”, and is featuring a costume contest from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mall Trick-or-Treating will take place from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Contestants should line up at the entrance to the food court by 3:30 p.m., where AAFES personnel will line everyone up by age group and then presented on stage. After judging, winners will be announced and receive a $100 gift card. Group A is children 4 and under, Group B ages 5-8, Group C ages 9-012, Group D ages 13-16, and Group E 17+.

The Camp Commander of Camps Foster and Lester has decreed two days of Halloween fun this year, with the 4th annual Foster Fright Night will run the evenings of October 29th and 30th on base.

Camp Services is overseeing the Foster Fright Night at Building 5965, near Gunner’s Gym, from 6 p.m. – 10 p.m. on both October 29th and 30th. The event features “the best haunted house on island, food and drinks, and frightful fun!!!” say the organizers. The event is open to both SOFA personnel and local nationals. Trunk-or-Treat takes place on October 30th.

Prizes for best costumes will be offered to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. Participation in the contest is open only to SOFA personnel, who must call 645-7317 to sign up. Candy donations, say Camp Services officials, are welcome.

Alcohol and pets are not welcome, and all children must be supervised by an adult. Non-SOFA participants must call 645-7317 to register their vehicles to enter Camp Foster. MLC/IHA employees and families must enter through Kitamae Gate. One MLC/IHA ID is required for each vehicle. All other local nationals must enter Camp Foster through the Flea Market Gate. All gates close to Fright Night traffic at 9 p.m.

Sam’s Café located just outside Camp Foster’s Legion Gate is winding down October with its Halloween Specials through the 31st. A special Roast Prime Rib of Beef dinner with horseradish and au jus natural, or a Tenderloin Steak with Garlic Chips and Mushrooms are both only ¥1,980. The special dinners include Ghost Buster pumpkin soup, Jack O’Lantern spooky salad, potatoes, seasonal vegetables and bread or rice.

Sam’s Café is featuring a special Halloween drink, the Devil’s Kiss, for only ¥600. The mysterious blend of rum, brandy and tropical juices are guaranteed to loosen tongues and lubricate eyeballs, says the Sam’s bartender. There’s also a non-alcohol version of the Devil’s Kiss offered at ¥450.

Meanwhile, Ghosts, goblins, ghouls and monsters will be taking up temporary residence in Okinawa City, for the city’s first Halloween Town.

Local shop owners and businesses have teamed up with a series of scheduled events at Kodomo no Kuni, the Okinawa Zoo Park, Grand Mer Resort, and along Park Avenue. The Zoo is having a Halloween Carnival on October 31st, while Grand Mer Resort has a special buffet lunch and a Costume Ball slated for the 30th. Park Avenue is having a stamprary event, where you visit shops or places of businesses to get a stamp on your ticket to receive various discounts or freebees at all locations, with welcome drinks at most participating businesses the 31st.

Goya and Park Avenue shopping areas are having Trick or Treat at all shops displaying a special Halloween balloon, and Plaza House Shopping Center is sponsoring a costume contest on Halloween day. The Koza Information Center has all the information at (098) 939-4845. Plaza House Shopping Center is sponsoring events in partnership with Okinawa City Koza Information Office on this, their first annual Haunted House.

The Haunted House is located on the shopping center’s 3rd floor, at the top of the escalators in the spot previously the Spin City Record Shop. If you’re looking for a place to celebrate your Halloween season, and aren’t too scared, this is a good place to be scared right out of your socks. Haunted House will be open Friday and Saturday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Entrance fees are ¥1,000 for adults and ¥800 for children. A ¥200 discount coupon is available in the flyer from the Koza Information Office.

Not to be outdone, Chatan’s Mihama j2009 Costume Contest takes place Saturday afternoon, with registration running 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and the on-stage parade and costume performances from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event, sponsored by Mihama American Village Tenant Kai, Chatan Mihama American Village Jigyosha Kai, will be offering $300 first prize, $200 second prize and $100 third prize, with merchandise prizes awarded to 4th through 10th place contest winners. The event is open to kids ages 13 and older.

For kids 12 and under, there’s other costume activities with awards, including a Super Jumbo Box of assorted candies to the 1st place winner, a Jumbo Box of candies to the 2nd place winner, and a Big Box Candies going to the 3rd place winner. In addition, merchants in Mihama American Village area shops will be doing their own candies distribution and offering discounts and freebies for Halloween visitors.
