H1N1 tags 3 players to slow pro basketball’s Rizing Fukuoka

Date Posted: 2009-10-22

It was a frustrating weekend for Rizing Fukuoka, the Basketball Japan League’s lone squad to have players contract the H1N1 influenza virus.

Three players were diagnosed with H1N1 and were not permitted to play in weekend contests, during which Fukuoka fell twice to the Osaka Evessa, 76-73 and 89-83. Marlyn Bryant and Shuhei Takeno both tested positive at a Fukuoka hospital last Thursday, two days after teammate Kohei Mitomi contracted the virus.

The loss of three players normally would have put Rizing Fukouka out of action for the weekend, as league rules stipulate each team must suit up at least eight players for a game. With three players out with the flu, Rizing Fukuoka had only seven players, but the league made an exception to the rule to permit the team to play.
