Complex investigation leads to two child abuse arrests

Date Posted: 2009-10-15

A little girl wandering alone through an Uruma City supermarket last March began as a “find your mother” case but has wound up with the girl’s mother and her boyfriend under arrest for child abuse.

A supermarket staff member asked the girl “where is your mom” and the girl’s mother was paged on the house audio system, but nobody claimed her. The young girl, later discovered to be four years old, was turned over to the local police station. Police looked at the girl and saw bruises and burn marks, and the girl’s eyes were red, so they contacted the Children’s Guidance Center had turned her over to their counselors.

The lengthy investigation led to an arrest last week of Masaya Irei, the boyfriend of the girl’s mother. The 46-year-old has not confessed to the crime yet, but has said the girl’s mother beat the child and burned her stomach and buttocks with cigarettes. Police arrested the girl’s mother, but investigators say evidence points to Masaya as the person who did the beatings and child abuse.
