Wild pig strolling Naha City excites observers

Date Posted: 2009-10-15

It’s not every day that people spot a wild boar or a pig wandering the streets of Naha City, but it happened this week.

The wild animal was walking slowly, in a calm and leisurely manner, through the streets of Shikina area, tailed by a mini-van and a man taking pictures. That added to the story, as the 61-year-old Naha City man told of his fascination with wild boars and wild pigs, traveling often to Kunigami Village’s Oku area forest to study them.

Kunimasa Miyagi says he’d had no luck spotting wild pigs during an outing to Kunigami, but then was extremely surprised to drive back into Naha City and spot a wild pig walking along as if he owned the neighborhood. Police got involved as people began reporting not only the pig on their residential street, but also the strange van.

Police say some residents buy wild pigs as pets, putting the animals on their yards, from which they occasionally escape. It has happened many times, police say, noting that each time they capture the animals the wild pigs’ owners come to the police station to pick them up. They think the current wild pig escapades are one of those, and that the owner will ultimately claim the porker.
