Okinawa Filipinos unite for disaster relief effort

Date Posted: 2009-10-14

What started as a personal effort to Miko Liggayu to help disaster victims in the Philippines quickly turned into a community project as Filipinos living on Okinawa joined her in her efforts.

A typhoon on Sep. 25 had wreaked havoc in Luzon, and Liggayu immediately upon hearing the news started her own personal mission completing donation boxes. She emailed her friends telling them that she would accept donations at her bar Niche in the form of used personal items and non-perishable canned or instant food and emergency supplies. The last day to donate will be Oct 18.

The boxes will be donated for the relief effort through Red Cross Manila.

So far more than a hundred Filipinos have joined her in her efforts in just five hours from the time she sent the first e-mails. Those who want to donate can contact Miko by e-mail at miko@nicheokinawa.com
