Date Posted: 2009-10-08

Spooks and goblins are traditional Halloween creatures, and Mihama American Village is seeking all manner of ghostly costumes for its October 31st Halloween Mihama 2009 Costume Contest.

Mihama American Village merchants have been staging the contest for a few years, and now Halloween is picking up momentum across Japan. Ms. Midori Ikei, Assistant to the Chairman of Mihama American Village Jigyosha Kai says “participation by the military community is welcome and very much desired.” She notes “this event is a great opportunity for a mutually significant cultural exchange between the U.S. and Okinawa. It has been organized,” she adds, “as a means to vitalize not only the Mihama area, but also tourism in Okinawa.”

The main event is the costume Contest, with 10 prizes including a $300 first prize, $200 second place and $100 third place cash prize. Competitors finishing 4th through 10th win assorted merchandise. The Mihama American Village area shops will have their own ways of adding to the festivities, including distributing candy and offering discounts and freebies.

Additional prizes are offered for children under 12, including a 1st Prize Super Jumbo Box of assorted candies. Second place winner receives a Jumbo Box of candies, while the third place finisher receives a big box. Other prizes are offered for 4th through 10th place winners.

Competition registration is Saturday, October 31st, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The On-stage Parade and Performances runs 5 pm. to 7 p.m. An awards ceremony takes place starting at 7 p.m., immediately after the competition.
