Suspect finally confesses to August beating death

Date Posted: 2009-10-01

Police were sure they had the right man in custody after a 22-year-old mainland woman working in an Okinawa snack bar was brutally beaten to death, but he wasn’t talking.

Kousuke Kawakami was in custody in connection with another case when Okinawa City Police heard from an eyewitness that he was their man. The 25-year-old man, in jail charged with beating a woman in Tomishiro City during the April 28th ~ May 16th time frame and stealing ¥740,000 before escaping, was identified as the assailant by a friend of the woman beaten to death.

“Yes, I did beat her, but I didn’t know she would die,” Kawakami has told police. He had been living in the Misato area residence at the time. Police say the young woman was found on a futon at the home, dressed and ready to go to work. The eyewitness told police “I saw the guy beating my friend; he was living with her.”
