Bogey costs Ai Miyazato Samsung Championship

Date Posted: 2009-09-24

A disastrous 18th hole in the final round cost Okinawa’s Ai Miyazato the Samsung Championship in San Diego.

Miyazato, currently ranked third in the Ladies Professional Golf Association tour standings behind Ji Yai Shin and Christie Kerr, tied the tourney winner, Choi Na Yeon, on the 16th hole with a four-foot birdie putt, then took the lead as Choi three-putted for bogey. The lead was short-lived as Miyazato fired her second shot on the 72nd hole of the tourney, the 18th, into the water, took a drop, and had to two-putt for a bogey and a fall to second.

She finished with a 69, the lowest round of the day at Torrey Pines South Course, but was second to Choi, who captured her first LPGA Tour win. Miyazato is still on a sizzling hot pace, winning the Evian Masters, racking up five top-six finishes and a tie for 10th. She’s in second place on the LPGA money list with $1,451,610, behind Ji Yai Shin and ahead of Christie Kerr.

“I can accept the fact that I lost by shooting a 15-under on a difficult course like this,” Miyazato said of the loss, “but I did all I could do out there.” She said “it is true I missed my shot on the last hole, but because I lost because of my own miss, I can learn from this and move on to the next tournament.”

Miyazato was using a 5-wood for her second shot on the 18th, trying to nail the 203 yards. Her approach shot struck the bank in front of the green and rolled into the water, leaving her no choice but to drop and try for the par. Instead of a par, she two-putted for a bogey.
