Cell phone service factory coming to Ginowan City

Date Posted: 2009-09-17

An American cell phone company’s Japan subsidiary is going to build a service factory that will employ more than 700 people in Okinawa.

Ashlion Japan plans to make its business base in Ginowan City, opening a factory to provide cell phone terminal repair and phone change-outs. Ashlion was established in America’s Silicon Valley near San Francisco in 1994. The company’s business is to interface with cell phone customers who have phone or phone terminal problems.

The Okinawa facility will provide support to cell phone companies and customers. Ashlion created its Japan company in 2004, and already provides support to NTT Docomo shops. Ashlion officials say the intent is to provide same cell phone terminals within one or two days after a customer loses or breaks a cell phone.

Ashlion officials say they chose Okinawa because of lower costs than operating in Tokyo. They also expressed excitement about opportunities for business because of Naha International Airport traffic.
