Prefecture to cancel Okuma Dam construction planning

Date Posted: 2009-09-17

Although conceding there could still be a need for dam construction, the Okinawa Prefecture Enterprise Bureau has announced plans to cancel the Okuma Dam construction project.

Tsuguzo Miyagi, the bureau director, says “the current water situation can be taken care of by existing water supplies, or new water source development.” He says comparisons of users and dam development and promotion costs show less need, “so we are going to withdraw the Okuma Dam” that was set up by Governor Hirokazu Nakaima.

Okinawa Prefecture Enterprise Bureau was supposed to pay for 70% of the dam construction expenditures. Miyagi says “we can still say that dam construction could be needed if we think of ideas for river improvement,” but says there are many other ideas that can work for river improvements.
