Kinserfest typhoon-free, ready to rock

Rock, ska punk, variety and Hawaiian folk music all share the stage this weekend as Kinserfest opens its doors to Okinawa.

Only a year after Typhoon Sinlaku tucked tail and moved to the north to usher in Kinserfest, this 2009 version—the 15th annual festival sponsored by Marine Corps Community Services--opens Saturday for a two-day run, bringing music, dance, Eisa and martial arts demonstrations to the community at the base in Urasoe City. Camp Kinser opens its gates to the military and civilian communities Saturday and Sunday 1 p.m.to 10 p.m.

Aside from the music and free entertainment, Marine Corps Community Services will insure a variety of game booths, Kiddie Land and many food booths. American pizza, always a top attraction, will be available again this year. As with all MCCS festivals, visitors will also have a chance at winning giveaways and prizes offered by sponsors.

Twenty contestants will play in a Deal or No Deal-style competition, with the grand prize of two round-trip tickets for two to any United Airlines gateway cities, courtesy of United Airlines and Omega World Travel. Other prizes include overnight stays at the Marriott, Beach Tower Okinawa, Tokyo Dai Ichii Grand Mer, Okinawa Naha Hotel and Rizzan hotels, an iPod shuffle, and a Zojirushi rice cooker.

Attendees can also enter to win a pair of round-trip tickets to any UAL gateway city via Kansai or Narita, or a business-class upgrade, courtesy of United Airlines and Omega World Travel.

Entertainment at this year’s Kinser Festival includes Chicago Shamrox Hot Rox dancers, Hawaiian folk music by Anuhea, Ska punk by Pimpbot and variety tunes from Myxed. Admission to the 2009 Kinser Festival is free, and open to not only SOFA status personnel, but to local nationals. Organizers say no pets, backpacks or outside alcohol will be permitted on the base. The festival takes place in the Camp Kinser warehouse area, adjacent to buildings 325 and 326
