Man’s trial in child abuse case is now under way

Date Posted: 2009-09-10

A Naha City man’s trial on charges of child abuse and inflicting bodily injury on a child is under way at the Naha District Court.

The prosecutor’s made his opening statements and Ken Nishiwakugawa has already admitted abusing his eight-year-old stepson, his girlfriend’s son. The 30-year-old unemployed Nishiwakugawa says the boy’s crying and daily manners were irritating.

Nishiwakugawa lived together with his girlfriend and her son, and he says he never liked the boy, so he began abusing and beating him. He admitted that since July 2009 he pushed lighted cigarettes against the boy, burning him, and says he even asked his girlfriend to put a lighted cigarette to the boy’s lips. When examined by doctors, the boy had burns on his face, stomach and legs, and bruises on his face and body.

The case investigation was initiated after the boy’s school had asked the City children’s Conference Center to intervene. The trial’s next session will continue in the near future.
