Date Posted: 2002-10-26

A four-year-old boy drowned in a bathtub in a public bathhouse in Naha City, Friday. According to Naha Police investigators, the child had arrived at America-Yu bathhouse with his aunt. The police say that the two were regular customers at the establishment. After they entered the bath, the boy reportedly complained that it was too hot for him and that he wanted to go into another tub. When the aunt looked for him after a few minutes, when was not able to see him around and started searching.

She finally found the boy lying face down in the bottom of a larger tub. She pulled the boy out and alerted the staff that called an ambulance. The boy was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead.

There were several people in the bathhouse when the accident happened, but on one noticed that the boy went under. Investigators speculated that an artificial waterfall in the end of the tub might have pushed him under the surface. They suspect that as he wandered to the waterfall it pushed him down very quickly without anyone noticing.
