Date Posted: 2009-09-04

The numbers of influenza cases on Okinawa is increasing, and Okinawa Prefecture elementary and junior high school students are feeling the pinch as some schools are closed as safety measures.

Prefecture officials report 31 mass epidemic outbreaks in Okinawa between August 25th ~ 28th, with more than 387 cases including some at Prefecture kindergartens and preschools. Officials say children and teachers at one Urasoe City elementary school are being given protective masks.

Ten schools in the prefecture have been closed, including in Naha City, Ginowan City, Nakijin Village, Ie Village, and other archipelago southwestern schools. Ginowan City reports two classes in another school have been shut down.
