Hatoyama should get PM post for four years: DPJ

Date Posted: 2009-08-22

Euphoric with continued polls showing the Democratic Party of Japan should win the August 30th House of Representatives, the party’s secretary general is pitching the idea his boss should be given a four-year term as Japan’s Prime Minister.

Katsuya Okada says “if we win the House of Representatives election, keeping Yukio Hatoyama as premier during this period will be a consensus among the people.” Hatoyama is currently the DPJ president. Okada pressed his case during a session with reporters in Chiba, going further and insisting a DPJ victory should lead to the party’s keeping the House of Representatives in place for a full four years.

The DPJ is leading by as much as 20 percentage points over the ruling Liberal Democratic Party in polls. While an outright victory against the LDP isn’t widely expected, the opposition party is now forming potential alliances with other minor parties to garner a majority.
