Flash flooding kills four in Naha City

Date Posted: 2009-08-20

Four men inspecting a bridge in downtown Naha were found dead Thursday morning after heavy rains triggered flash flooding yesterday.

The men were part of a team of six inspectors checking bridge resistance to earthquakes Wednesday afternoon when the flash flooding started about 2 p.m. Eyewitnesses say the six men had been standing in ankle-deep water by the bridge when the heavy downpour began about 1:30 p.m.

The four bodies were swept away by the swollen river waters. They were recovered today. The other two inspectors made their way to safety.
