Parents drown disabled son, back out of planned suicides

Date Posted: 2009-08-20

A distraught couple frustrated by their disabled son’s condition living in a special welfare living center checked the boy out of the facility, took him to the ocean in the Kayo area near Nago City, and let him drown.

The husband and wife are now under arrest, in custody of Nago City Police. Authorities say 67-year-old Yoshimasa his 62-year-old wife, Hatsuko, were in financial trouble and decided to murder their son, then commit suicide. The couple had gone to the Nago City living center last Tuesday and told the staff “we’d like to take our son out,” and the staff agreed.

Two days later, police investigators piecing the case together say, they received a call about 9 p.m. from people saying “It looks like three family members are going to die. There’s nobody at home. They might be going murder-suicide.” Police found the couple, but not the son. The couple admitted drowning the son near Kayo. Asked why, the couple said “we have ¥30 million in loan money, and we can’t repay it, so we wanted to commit suicide.”

The couple told police “we couldn’t leave our son, because he needs us. We thought first we’d kill our son, and then we die after him, but we couldn’t die.”
