Angry villagers want mayor to ‘pay up’

Date Posted: 2009-08-13

In the aftermath of a Tokyo court ordering tiny Iheya Village to fulfill terms of a contract with an incinerator machine manufacturer, villagers are demanding the mayor who caused the problem pay the multi-million yen settlement.

Mayor Shinsuke Nishime made a private contract several years ago, choosing his own company to build the village’s waste treatment incinerator. The original contract holder was awarded ¥140 million in damages, with orders that Iheya Village pay it. Some 75 villagers have taken the mayor to court in a lawsuit, while 475 have filed the paperwork to recall the mayor and have a new election.

Residents say Nishime made the fraudulent contract, and have accused him of malpractice. Villagers, who say their tiny community has little money, are asking the court to make the mayor pay the ¥140 million to the Tokyo company.
