Date Posted: 2003-01-10

Following a long list of complaints from local residents Ishikawa officials have decided to close a stretch of former Highway 58 in Nakadomari, Onna Village for motorcycles nighttime between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m.

The residents complain that ever since Highway 58 in Nakadomari area was re-routed through a bypass, gangs of motorcyclists have used the area as their gathering place disturbing resident’s sleep with noise.

The police tried first to curb the presence of the motorcyclists by staging regular checkpoints and handing out warnings but to no avail. Finally officials decided to declare a 1.35-kilometer stretch of the road off limits at nights. The ban includes minibikes. Only local residents who live in the area can drive to and from their homes freely. The police issue them special permits.

In the beginning the police plan to stage roadblocks at both ends of the stretch, and later follow up with regular patrols to enforce the ban. Local residents say that there have been more than 30 motorcyclists during weekends who have been driving through the area on the sole purpose of harassing the residents. They say that the motorcyclists claim that residents have targeted them unfairly.

Ishikawa Police Chief Katsuhisa Kanemura says that it became obvious that something ad to be done. “I hope that all law abiding motorists will understand. Although it is a public road, we need to protect local residents safety and peace,” Kanemura said.
