Date Posted: 2009-08-08

Okinawa Prefecture Police gathered the evidence, U.S. Marine Corps Military Police joined in the investigation, and an 18-year-old Marine has been taken into custody for robbing a taxi driver at knifepoint last Saturday.

The Filipino-American U.S. Marine has confessed to getting into the taxi in Naha Cityís Maejima area, then ordering the taxi driver to stop. He admits he stuck a knife in the driverís neck while demanding money. The taxi driver gave the robber •60,000 and about $100, and the assailant fled. Officials say the taxi driverís neck injuries are expected to take a week to heal.

The Marine is now in custody at the Camp Hansen Brig. The Naha Prosecutorís Office will make the decision whether to bring the case before a civilian courtópossibly the first trial in Okinawa by the new citizens-judge system. Under terms of the Special Action Committee Okinawa agreement, the Japanese could have demanded the Marine be surrendered to Okinawan control. Prefecture Police have not asked for the Marine to be handed over to local authorities.
