Miyazato finishes 3rd at Women’s British Open

Date Posted: 2009-08-06

A week after winning her first Ladies Professional Golf Championship, Ai Miyazato tried doing it again at the Women’s British Open, but fell short and wound up in a four-way tie for third place.

Okinawa’s Miyazato had been tied with the eventual tournament winner, Catriona Matthew, until the 12th hole of the final round in Lytham St. Annes, England, scoring 73 to close at 1-over-par 289. The 39-year-old Matthew, from Scotland, reeled off three consecutive birdies on the back nine as she rolled to a three-shot win over Karrie Webb.

The 24-year-old Miyazato tallied four birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey in her final round. The double bogey six on the 17th hole eliminated her chance at the title. “I played very hard,” Miyazato said, “just like last week. I felt good while playing.” She told reporters “I believe I have a chance to win a major tournament in the coming years.”

Mika Miyazato, another Okinawa gal unrelated to Ai Miyazato, fired a 75 to close four over with a share of 11th place. The 19-year-old Mika is a rookie on the U.S. LPGA circuit. Okinawa’s Shinobu Moromizato tied for 25th with an 8-over-par 78.
