Date Posted: 2009-08-06

A taxi driver in Naha City’s Maejima district was threatened by a knife wielding foreigner over the weekend, the incident ending with the driver uninjured but out ¥60,000.

The would-be assailant “took the taxi from the Matsuyama area, then told the driver to stop,” police said. The taxi passenger brandished a knife, threatening the driver “Hey! Money, Money. Give me money.” The driver told police the passenger thrust the knife at his body, making him afraid. The driver gave the robber all the money in his cashbox.

The taxi driver said his robber spoke some Japanese, but “not very good English.” He described the assailant as 160cm tall, wearing black top and black pants. Police have asked the U.S. military for assistance in the investigation.
