Workboat runs aground, capsizes leaving two dead

Date Posted: 2002-10-18

A three-ton workboat owned and operated by an ocean cargo company “Kaiun” ran aground and capsized late Monday evening. The mishap left two men drowned; one was able to swim ashore. According to officials, the vessel ran aground about 800 meters off Azama Fishing Wharf as it was returning to the post from Kudaka Island where they had done construction work. The boat veered off the course in the darkness and hit the reef. It turned upside down and all three men onboard where thrown in the water.

Yasu Tanahara, 47, managed to swim to the fishing port and alerted authorities. A police patrol boat and an 11th Maritime Safety Agency helicopter was dispatched to the scene. The helicopter was able to spot the two men’s bodies drifting in the ocean and they were retrieved. They were taken to a hospital where the 44-year-old and 51-year-old were declared dead.
