Suicides jump 50% over past six monthsDate Posted: 2009-07-30 The director of Okinawa Prefecture’s Medical health Welfare Center says the numbers are increasing particularly in the 40~50-year-old age group. Haruo Nakamoto says “It is because of the world recession that so many workers are coming out, and it will only increase.” He cites the 8.5% unemployment rate, which is continuing to rise, as the reason for suicides. “We have to take good care of depressed people,” he says, noting the number of distressed individuals is rising “because they have no jobs.” Nakamoto adds that nationwide, 17,076 people have killed themselves during the January ~ June period. He says taking care of depressive psychosis patients is already under way, but emphasizes medical treatment fatilities are having to rethink how to get patients well. “we want each municipality to take care of people who are having troubles, such as depression,” Nakamoto said. |
