Five cops injured in liquor store robbery

Date Posted: 2009-07-23

A 45-year-old would-be robber is under arrest both for breaking and entering and attacking Ginowan City cops who were responding to a liquor store robbery.

The 4 a.m. Monday robbery was quickly disrupted by eight police officers who arrived at the liquor store less than five minutes after the alarm was triggered. Atsushi Uehara raced from the store, straight into the arms of police surrounding him. Uehara pulled two knives and made threats, then attacked five of the officers, injuring them. The suspect slashed the officers’ arms, faces and necks before he was subdued.

He told officers he’d gone into the store to drink alcohol, and was carrying a flashlight and gloves, and tested positive for alcohol. Police say nothing in the store had been opened or damaged. The store owner had only praise for police, praising them for “the quick response”. He said he’d installed the alarm only two weeks ago after hearing about break-ins in the neighborhood, happily noting “it looks like it came in pretty handy.”
