Locals team up to promote health bio-tech advances

Date Posted: 2009-07-23

With an eye to Okinawa being the Asian hub for health longevity issues within ten years, four Okinawa organizations have joined forces to plan a unified future.

The University of the Ryukyus, Okinawa Prefecture, The Prefecture Industrial Union and the Okinawa Industrial Promotion Project Network have formed a pact to work together in developing the health bio-technology industry to make Okinawa the central point. Group officials say they envision a very sophisticated health bio technology industry here, capable of attracting industries to build in the prefecture.

The four organizations are forecasting a ¥100 billion industry, and say they’ll be inviting ten large companies to come to Okinawa, where they’re expected to hire 1,000 new employees. Ryukyu University industrial students and professors envision a cooperative promotion institute being the growth engine for the project.

Leaders of the four organizations say their plan is to draw attention to special Okinawan nutritional foods, special health function foods, medical goods and preventive medicine services that will form a solid core for industrial businesses. They predict teamwork in using equipment and technology will provide an exceptional management system and technological innovations.
