Residents object to JGSDF using official truck at beach

Date Posted: 2009-07-16

Japanese Ground Self Defense Forces routinely use government vehicles to transport sea kayaks to the beach for training, and even have authorization to use the trucks for similar leisure activities with their families.

Tamagusuku area residents are not pleased with that activity, and have been outspoken to the JGSDF at Okubu Beach. “We feel anxiety and something’s out of place with this truck,” a resident complained to soldiers. Tourists said the military vehicles make them feel uncomfortable.

The Self Defense Forces explain “we are doing sea kayak lessons every month at this beach, and we carry the sea kayaks with the trucks every time.” The SDF officer also noted “we report on use of this beach to area officials and the fisherman’s association, too,” but a local resident contends “we know you need to enjoy the sea kayaks,” but then asks “why do you use Self Defense Force trucks instead of private trucks?”
