Drunk Marines cross Urasoe, Okinawa City cops

Date Posted: 2009-07-09

A 22-year-old Marine stationed at Camp Hansen ruined his weekend when he took a taxi from Camp Hansen to Okinawa City, then skipped without paying.

Sergeant Charles Wayne Walburton was arrested by Okinawa City Police at 2 a.m. Saturday after being chased by the taxi driver who wanted his ¥5,240 taxi fare. The driver chased the 22-year-old Walburton while calling police. The Marine told police “I don’t remember,” asking “Didn’t I pay yet?”

Only hours later, in Urasoe City’s Gusukuma area, police observed a 22-year-old Camp Foster Marine driving and weaving down the road. Police stopped Marine Sergeant Arturo Velasco Jr., and told him they were doing an alcohol test. Police administered the test to the Marine about 5 a.m., and found Velasco’s level at 0.91mg. “Yes, I know I was drunk,” Velasco told Urasoe Police, but then said “I didn’t drive the car.” Police arrested Velasco and charged him with drunk driving.
